Team XBMC recently announced their work with Broadcom Media PC Group to bring 1080p hardware decoding to XBMC via the Broadcom Crystal HD hardware decoder (BCM970012).
Right now, the Crystal HD chip is only in mini PCIe cards but should make it’s way to PCIe x1 and ExpressCard some time in the future. This means lots of love for nettops, netbooks, AppleTV and Mac Mini (at the cost of $69) but none for the rest of us for a while. Broadcom Crystal HD support will be available in the next release of XBMC. Until then you can try out one of the nightly builds.
This changes the game for XBMC and other multimedia software because it has a common programming API, it’s cross-platform, and it’s open source. Hopefully we’ll see more 3rd party media players taking advantage of this soon.

While not nearly as crotch-hardening as this afternoon’s official launch of the Nexus One phone by Google, I’m pleased at what the Boxee team has just given a tease on: The Boxee Box Remote.
Unfortunately, no details have been shared about the device. All they’ve revealed is that it has a QWERTY keyboard on its underbelly, wireless of some sort, and sleek as hell.
If I were a gambling man, I’d bet the Boxee Box Remote will only be shipped in box with the Boxee Box (hence the name). I hope not, but we’ll see.
UPDATE: It looks like Engadget has gotten hands-on with the Boxee Box at CES.

xbTwitter has been given a new name and bit of an update courtesy of Itay Weinberger of XBMC Blog. Meet xbTweet–not to be confused with xTweet.
If you’re a XBMC user looking for the ability to automatically tweet your watched videos and music, try have to give xbTweet a try. Unlike similary apps for XBMC, xbTweet auto-tweets, auto-starts and uses OAuth so you don’t have to save your Twitter credentials. According to Itay, we’ll soon be able to change how the tweet looks.
To install/add xbTweet:
Now that there is a good auto-tweeting app available for XBMC I can finally move back to using XBMC instead of Boxee. I look forward to future enhancements.
