I had a laptop with a broken screen, I snapped it in half, threw the screen in the bin, and it's now the HTPC and working beautifully except for the fact that the antenna for the wireless was around the screen and so it doesn't get such a good signal.. still, it is working beautifully a couple of years later, I was sure it would only last a couple of months before it became too slow / buggy / annoying..

If I had my time again I should probably keep the screen on for the antenna, but I wouldn't as it was an awesome office space moment :) snapping a laptop sounds good..

One downside of notebook/netbook is that surround sound is not supported. I think most of them don't have coaxial/optical output for sound.

Completely agree, currently I use two laptops for this.
The only problem I have that even my VAIO 17" 1200P Blue-ray laptop still unable to output smoothly to my 56" Panasonic plasma 1080 P while playing Blue-ray discs via HDMI cable.
Currently I am eying TOSHIBA Qosmio X505-Q890, but still doubt it will output statter-free in a way my blue-ray player does.

No doubt! I have gone through so many Tower mods with old desktops with P4 processors, noise/heat issues and Frankenstein-like setups. I decided to use a 2-year old HP Pavilion DV5??? (64 bit/ 4GB RAM) and upgraded it to Win7 and it doesn't need to hide in a cabinet since it looks goods closed. It even has a IR receiver built-in on the front (I didn't even know that when I bought it LOL). Long story short - its way easier than modding old desktops. Probably in a few years netbooks will be easily capable to pump out 1080P + resolutions & put out way less heat.
