PlayOn team needs $10 million to bring PlayOn to Mac OS X.

If you have a Windows box or a nifty VM setup you probably know and love PlayOn. But what about Mac OS X users who want native support for Mac? Yesterday, PlayOn CEO Jeff Lawrence spoke on the status, or lack thereof, of PlayOn for Mac OS X.

Long story short: Until they get ~$10 million to fund the extensive project, don’t hold your breath. Continue to use workarounds like Boot Camp or VM software like Parallels or VMware to run this Windows app.

A lot of you have requested PlayOn for Mac, and we’d absolutely love to do it! But it’s not that easy. We’ve estimated that developing PlayOn for Mac would cost us upwards of $10 million. There are some big challenges to overcome to get it working on the Macintosh platform: we’d be rewriting most of PlayOn from scratch, and inventing some new stuff along the way. Some of us at PlayOn use Macs regularly, and as much as we’d love a Mac version, we’ve happily settled with using Boot Camp at our homes and offices. We also have a ton of customers who are successfully running PlayOn using Parallels. Unless one of you wants to give us $10 million (anyone?), we’re going to have to continue to rely on workarounds like Boot Camp and Parallels. Thanks for understanding.

Cheers,

Jeff Lawrence

With NVIDIA GeForce 9400M, GeForce 320M or GeForce GT 330M and the latest Plex binary, you can enjoy H.264 hardware decoding.

Apple recently released Video Decode Acceleration Framework Reference (VDA) for Mac OS X 10.6.3 and later which opens the door for enabling H.264 hardware accelerated decoding in Plex.

Thanks to the hard work of Ryan of the Plex team the latest Plex binary is now integrated with the VDA framework, providing high definition GPU decoding in Plex for devices with NVIDIA GeForce 9400M, GeForce 320M or GeForce GT 330M. To reap the fruits of Ryan’s labor, just download the binary and install it into Plex.app/Contents/MacOS.
